Have top-quality water and let your customers benefit from a perfect finish

A high-quality car wash depends on three key factors: the car wash machine, the chemicals, and the water used.

Let’s focus on water. We already had a water-treatment overview in a previous post, in which we encouraged you to recycle water and protect the environment. We are now going to describe the systems that allow us to pre-treat water at our car wash facility. These recommendations are intended to improve the durability of your machines, keep them in good condition, achieve a quality car wash and, ultimately, give your customers a better service.

The first step you must take is to find out about the source of the water you use at your station and its quality. In general terms, you can have water from the mains -supplied by the corresponding authority- which is frequently quite stable and chlorinated; or from a well, which usually has more variability, quality-wise, this requiring more extensive pretreatments.

Whichever the case, the most important thing is to determine the quality of water at your facility. To that end, ISTOBAL offers clients complete water-testing systems.

Once the tests have been made, what comes next? How do we know which equipment we need? Read these recommendations carefully:

  1. How much water do you need at your car wash station? 5 m3/h, 10 m3/h, etc. Make sure you have this piece of information, otherwise your equipment may be either insufficient or oversized.
  2. What is the hardness of your water? Lime is responsible for the white stains on the vehicle surface after the car wash. Water tests represent it as water hardness, and it can be easily prevented with water softeners.
  3. Does your water contain iron above the recommended values? If your answer is Yes, you will need a deferrizing filter in addition to the water softener. It is very important to take iron values into account. It is frequently forgotten. Iron is a metal. It builds up in water and pipes causing rust and a faulty operation.
  4. What about the remaining water values? Are there too many salts? Is conductivity above 1000 ppm? If your answer is Yes and you want to treat your water adequately, you may have to install a demineraliser next to the water softener. Used in water treatment, demineralisers use osmosis membranes that retain most salts present in water, providing higher quality. Among other factors, a perfect finish depends on the quality of the water used in the final rinse.
  5. Finally, it is important to disinfect any type of water before using it on machines, particularly when water is stored. Why? To prevent fungi and bacteria from proliferating in water tanks. This potential issue is dealt with by disinfectant dosing pumps, which measure and dose disinfectant continuously preventing disinfectant products from being underdosed or overdosed.
